Things to Look Out For in London in May
What London events are worth watching out for in May? Consider pencilling the following few into your calendar.
1) The FA Cup Final
The FA Cup Final on 11 May 2013 will be streamed around the world from Wembley Stadium. Wigan Athletic will be playing Manchester City, Wigan’s first chance at an FA Cup.
As well as bringing all England to their television sets, the FA Cup has historical significance — it’s the world’s oldest association football contest. Football clubs of all standards compete for the Cup, teams in any league form England’s largest clubs down to village amateurs. It’s therefore possible for little-known home-grown teams, at least in theory, to progress to the top and become “giant killers.” In practice the system of byes and qualification rounds mean the biggest and smallest teams rarely meet on the pitch.
2) Grand Designs Live
From the 5 May to the 13 May, England’s number one home show will host an expo of architecture, interior, gardens, and household design in London’s Excel.
3) Royal Windsor Horse Show
For prestigious events, the Royal Windsor Horse Show is a must see. From the 8th to the 12th of May, the royal family’s horse show will take place inside the grounds of Windsor Castle. The show is known to attract the complete list of British aristocracy, either as competitors or as spectators.
4) Open Air Theatre 2013
Starting on the 16th of May and continuing throughout the summer, the Open Air Theatre will present two repertory productions, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Ragtime. The Open Air Theatre is the oldest permanent professional outdoor theatre in England and one of London’s largest auditoriums.
5) Eric Clapton in Royal Albert Hall
From the 17th to the 26th of May, Eric Clapton will be performing at London’s famous Royal Albert Hall. He’ll be backed by long time touring partners Willie Weeks (bass), Chris Stainton (piano, keyboards), Steve Jordan (drums), and Doyle Bramhall II (guitar) as well as several newcomers.
6) Vintage Fashion Fair
On the 19th May, Britain’s vintage fashion obsession will come together at the several times a year Vintage Fashion Fair. Vintage dealers will offer their collections to all comers in Primrose Hill.
7) RHS Chelsea Flower Show
From the 21st to the 25th of May, garden lovers will have a little slice of heaven at the Royal Hospital Chelsea as thousands of plants and gardening products will be up for sale. Countless celebrities attend too, making it an excellent place for people spotting.
8) Rush in London’s O2 Arena
Famous Canadian rock band Rush will be playing the O2 Arena on the 24th of May.
9) Mind Body Spirit Festival 2013
from the 24th to the 27th of May, the Mind Body Spirit Festival will come to London Earls Court, offering a large range of activities so you can develop an empowered lifestyle.
The Mind Body Spirit Festival is a London icon that’s been running since the late 1970s. Free workshops, live stage performances, mediation sessions, and even concerts will be taking place.
10) Field Day 2013
on the 25th of May, Field Day 2013 in Victoria Park brings together pioneering artists and alternative promoters. Field Day is a five year old music festival that started as a village event… it’s now a music festival that regularly pulls crowds in excess of 20,000.
